Kingsmead Cricket Stadium, Durban

Although it operates under the sponsorship-based name of Sahara Stadium Kingsmead, this cricket ground in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal is more commonly referred to as “Kingsmead". The 25 000-seater Stadium is within walking distance from Durban’s famous Indian Ocean coastline and is the home ground of the Sunfoil Dolphins. The ground incorporates traditional grass banks, as well as towering modern Stands. Kingsmead has witnessed some of South African cricket’s finest moments. It staged its first Test match on 18 January 1923, a game between South Africa and England that resulted in a draw. Kingsmead has been the host venue for the annual Boxing Day Test, when the Test is held in South Africa, but from the 2013/14 season the match will be played at Super Sport Park in Centurion. Since the 1980’s, the ground has been extensively redeveloped with new stands at the Umgeni and Old Fort Road ends, but the old main grandstand remains as a reminder of past glories. The pitch is laid slightly Below Sea Level and local folklore maintains that when the tide comes in during the late afternoon, the water table rises, offering unexpected movement to seam bowlers. Many batting collapses in past matches have (jokingly) been blamed on the changes in the tide. The Stadium is used every other year as the finishing point of the Comrades Marathon, the annual ultra-marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Because the marathon alternates directions each year, it only finishes in Durban in odd-numbered years. Sahara Stadium Kingsmead showcases 8 Function Rooms; ideal for corporate conferences, executive board meetings, product launches, weddings, birthdays, and cocktail parties. It is also able to host outdoor events such as music concerts, festivals, and road shows.

Ballito, Dolphin Coast- KZN

In the heart of the Dolphin Coast lies Ballito, nestled between the sugar-cane fields of KwaZulu Natal's famous 'Green & Gold' and is flanked to the East by golden Beaches and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The waters off Ballito's Beach are the playground of the bottle nose dolphins, which frolic in the waters close to shore and are visible all year round. The dolphins favour this stretch of coastline because of it's relatively clear and shallow waters, allowing dolphins to swim close to shore in order to feed. Surveys of these waters suggest that they are frequented by a school of about 200 dolphins, which break up into smaller groups. Whales can also be spotted on their annual migration to Mozambique for the summer. The main swimming beach in Ballito is 'Willard Beach'. It provides safe swimming with qualified life-guards seven days a week, and is protected with shark nets. It also has a fully equipped first aid station. Willard Beach is also a popular spot for surfing and body boarding. Lifeguards and shark nets are provided at a second beach, Clarke Bay. Further South of Clarke Bay is the Ballito tidal pool which caters for the young and old. The Pools are well maintained, clean and are home to a wide variety of sea life. Moving South is Salmon Bay, which is a launch Area for watercraft. This Beach is also popular with surfers. The Ballito Inflatable Boat Clubhouse is also located here. Ballito is home to plenty of fishing spots, which guarantee keen fishermen of at least a good bite and perhaps the catch of a lifetime. Fishing licences can be purchased at any of the local post offices. Licences for mussels, oysters and crayfish can only be obtained from; the Nature Conservation offices at 25 Stella Road, Umbilo in Durban!

Coastlands Musgrave Hotel, Durban

The group was founded in 1993 when a number of entrepreneurs including investor, and Chief Executive Officer of the SNG Group Mr. Saantha Naidu acquired a holiday apartment building on Durban’s Golden Mile, the Coastlands Durban Hotel and Self Catering apartments. During 2007, the SNG group identified an Area in Musgrave to develop upmarket Residential Apartments, however during the construction phase it was decided to adapt this building according to the requirements of a Hotel, which then opened as a four star graded Hotel in November 2009. One year later, in November 2010 saw the launch of another four star Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga, followed by luxury apartments in Umdloti and on Kwa-Zulu Natal’s most prestigious Zimbali Golf and lifestyle Estate. In 2015, Coastlands Hotels and Resorts added the iconic Royal Hotel to its portfolio and is hard at work to restore this ‘old lady’ to its former glory.

Adam Small

Professor Adam Small was born on 21 December 1936 in Wellington, Cape Province (now Western Cape) to a mother of Muslim Indian heritage and a slave descendant father. He grew up in a village called Goree after his family moved there a few years after he was born, where his father was a teacher at a primary school.

Addington Hospital, Durban

The first functional Hospital in Durban, "The Bayside Hospital", was situated on the Victoria Embankment at the site now occupied by the Supreme Court. In 1879, the new Government Hospital was built at the present site, and named after Rt. Hon. Henry Addington who held the post of Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1801. Addington Hospital is a District and Regional Hospital with 471 beds and 2 200 staff, situated on South Beach, Durban. Hence the name: "Bayside Hospital".

The name Addington originates from that of the Estate of the late BWH Addison, the first Superintendent of the Hospital in present site in 1878. The other opinion about the origin of the name, says that a friend of Mr. Adison was instructed in 1860 to build a Township in Durban to be called Addington Township. Additions to the Hospital complex were ongoing, and the Hospital as it stands today was completed and officially opened on 10 November 1967.

As one gazes out at the sea from the high-rise Building, one can see close to shore the remains of the wreck of the 4 500-ton merchant ship, the 'Ovington Court', that ran aground on the Beach in front of the Hospital on 25 November 1940. Doctors were sent to the Beach render first-aid. The wards were cleared and many of the survivors were admitted. It was unbelievable that anyone could have been drowned so near the shore. This was the first of many emergency situations that the Hospital has responded to.

The hospital’s priority still remains the promotion of good service, adherence to service standards and recognition of high performing staff. “Guided by principles of Batho Pele, a desire to be amongst the best in the delivery of public health service is all that drives the institution forward”, says one of the staff at Addington. Today’s Hospital Manager, Dr J. Hurst, shares similar views regarding service excellence. She has been praised in many quarters, associated with many achievements the hospital has won, and initiated a number of projects in the name of service excellence “We work tirelessly to fulfill our mission and each problem is a driving force towards success”, said Dr Hurst in one her opening speech of the projects. "Today’s Addington, enjoys being at the cutting edge of others with its staff understanding the importance of collective action”, said one of the staff members.

Langkloof Valley, Eastern Cape

Part of the Cape Fold Belt, the Langkloof Valley and Mountains are a short range of Mountains that serve as a link between the Tsitsikamma and Outeniqua Mountains. In the Valley below is an Area that stretches for some 160 kilometres that is ideal for growing fruit, particularly apples and pears, but there are other varieties as well. Dotted in amongst the fruit trees of fruit Farms in the Area, are a selection of little Town: Haarlem, Avontuur, Misgund, Joubertina, Kareedouw, Louterwater, Krakeel and Assegaaibos,(most of which lie on Route 62). Every one of the Towns originally clustered around a Railway Station, a series of Houses, a Church and a School that evolved from the initial introduction of farmers to the Valley during the late 18th century. Today the Towns are much the same, some of them larger, others virtually as they were when they appeared in amongst the incredible Mountains that surround the Valley, both North and South of here. The Apple Express is a Train whose the future remains uncertain, runs infrequently today, links the Towns of the Valley and when it operates is well worth a trip for the sheer joy of riding on a narrow-gauge Railway Line and for the incredible views. It is the longest narrow-gauge Railway in the World today! The Area is rich with fynbos, over 2000 species of which lie in the Langkloof valley. As a result there is an incredible bird life and the Langkloof Valley is a hiking mecca. The Formosa Nature Reserve is also in the valley, between Misgund and Kareedouw.
