In 2013 a new lighthouse was erected on Robberg. The old lighthouse had become severely rusted. The new Lighthouse is a little less fancy, solar-powered, unmanned and just 8m tall. Today it is serviced by helicopter and one wonders the difficulties that must have been experienced during the construction of the original lighthouse.
This lighthouse is situated on the rocky peninsula of the Robberg Nature trail, South of Plettenberg Bay. This lighthouse was commissioned on 11 May 1950 and at 146 meters above sea level is the highest light on the South African Coast. The light is mounted on a six meter lattice tower. Solar panels keep the batteries charged. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 11 May 1984.
