The Amathola Mountain Range which is a subsidiary of the Winterberg Range, 15 km North-East of Alice, extending Westwards to the Great Fish River. The name is Xhosa and means 'weaned calves'. Some sources link the name to a person called 'Mathole', perhaps a chief who had a Village there! Amathole is one of the 7 districts of Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The seat of Amathole is East London. Over 90% of its 892,637 people speak Xhosa.
The Amatole Museum, formerly the 'Kaffrarian Museum' is a Natural and Cultural History Museum located in King William's Town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa
