Narainsamy Thambi Naidoo, also known as “Naran” or “Roy.” was born in 1901 in Pietermaritzburg, Natal (now kwaZulu-Natal) where the family had moved during the Anglo-Boer War (also known as the South African War). He was the son of Govindasamy Krishnamy Thambi Naidoo.
