Mabe rose to political prominence when he was in the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) then led by Julius Malema. From 2008, he was the Treasurer General of the ANCYL. In 2012, Malema was expelled from the African National Congress (ANC) by the ANC’s NDC following a suspension alongside the spokesperson and secretary general of the ANCYL[2]. Once Malema left the Youth League, Mabe campaigned to become the Youth League president.
In 2012 he was elected to ANC National Executive Committee and then he was elected as a member of parliament in 2014[3].
Mabe is also a very controversial figure, with his name linked to several scandals. In 2013 he was part of a fraud trial where over two-million-rand worth of assets were seized from him and his co-accused. He was acquitted in December 2014.
In 2015, he was implicated in the investigation into corruption at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) by former public protector, Thuli Madonsela. In 2018, after he had been elected the national spokesperson, he faced a sexual assault charge from his personal assistant. She was allegedly paid a settlement and he returned to work in 2019.[4]
He previously occupied the following positions[5]:
- Committee Whip at Standing Committee on Finance (National Assembly Committees) 2016 - 2017
- Member of Portfolio Committee on Science and Technology (National Assembly Committees) 2015 – 2017
- Member of National Assembly (Parliament) 2014 – 2017
- Member of Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (National Assembly Committees) 2014 – 2016
- Member of Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services (National Assembly Committees) 2014 – 2015
- Member-elect at National Assembly (Parliament) 2014
- 53rd Candidate on the African National Congress National Election List 2014
Puleng Peter Mabe (Pule Mabe) is currently a member of the ANC.
