Lucky Shabalala was born in 1962 in Inanda, Natal. He first developed an interest in art at school. From an early age he started carving heads.
Shabalala attended the Community Arts Workshop in the 1980s in Durban. He has obtained a number of commissions from offices in the centre of Durban to carve heads. He carved sculptures for the Offices of the Durban Architectural Practice, Mikula, Vines and Associates. He has exhibited on group exhibitions in Durban.
