Construction of this complex dates from the mid 19th Century and reflects a blending of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian Architectural Features. During its time it has served variously as a Prison, a Magistrates Court, a School, a Town Hall and Private Residences. More recently in 1978 it was acquired by the Durbanville Municipality, which restored the Buildings and converted them into a Cultural Centre. It was declared a National Monument under old NMC legislation on 26 October 1984.
