The African National Congress (ANC) is saddened to learn of the passing-on of Cde Basil “Jomo” Mavuso, a former MK combatant in Nova Catenga, a military training camp, south of Angola and an MK Veteran. He died at the age of 58 years

Cde Jomo distinguished himself to a point where he caught the attention of the ANC MK leadership, particularly that of Commander-in-Chief, cde President Oliver Tambo.

He was chosen to become part of the elite group that gave protection to the ANC leadership including, President Oliver Tambo, travelling the breath and length of the world on missions aimed at liberating the masses of our people.

Upon his return from exile, he was chosen as one of the senior security officers providing security to President Nelson Mandela. A duty he performed nobly with distinction and dedication.

He was nicknamed “Jomo”, In Nova Catenga, after his dazzling football skills which he displayed during weekend matches which MK combatants used to have as a way to entertain ourselves. It was here that cde Jomo was natured politically and militarily under the tutelage of the military genius of the late Cde Julius Mokoena, the Camp Commander, and the political astuteness of Mark Shope and Jack Simons.

Cde Jomo was an excellent communicator, a selfless cadre who always place the needs of ANC and the people South Africa ahead of his own needs. He was a real man of reason.

As the ANC, we salute this gallant solder of the nation, a freedom fighter and a comrade. His sacrifices will always be cherished by the ANC, the Mass Democratic Movements of our country, the African continent and the world.

Cde Jomo is survived by his beloved wife Thoko, who has been with him from the days of exile as a partner, wife and comrade in the struggle for the liberation of our people, his son, Vusi, four of his siblings, 3 sisters and a brother.

The ANC sends its condolences to his family, friends and comrades.
