ANC statement on incident at Luthuli House, 29 February 2008

ANC Headquarters Luthuli House has been evacuated following an incident at the entrance to the building. The details of the incident are as follows:

  • A man entered the front door of the building at approximately 10h30 morning, poured petrol onto the floor and set it alight.
  • The fire was extinguished by ANC security personnel, the fire alarm was activated and the building evacuated.
  • The individual was apprehended and taken into custody by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police.
  • No-one was hurt in the incident and damage was minimal.
  • The individual did not get past the building`s security doors. Nor did the fire.
  • ANC headquarters staff have been instructed to go home so that the fire and smoke damage at entrance to the building can be cleaned up.
  • The ANC is still working to confirm the identity of the individual and possible reasons for his actions.
