Witzenberg is nestled in the Cape Winelands District on Route 62, consisting of : Ceres; Tulbagh; Wolseley; Op-die-Berg and Prince Alfreds Hamlet. The name means 'basin of water behind the Witsenberg'. This is a Mountain Range extending North and South, East of Tulbagh and North-West of Ceres. Witsenberg got its name from WA van der Stel in 1699, in honour of a friend of his, Nicholaes Witsen. Who was a Director of the Dutch East India Company and 13 times Mayor, of Amsterdam in Holland, between 1682-1706. This picturesque valley is world renowned for producing export quality deciduous fruit, vegetables and wine products. The area also produces olives, grain, beef and pork.
