The international peace keeping body, the United Nations (UN), which had replaced the League of Nations in 1945, opened its headquaters two years after construction work at UN Plaza in New York, USA, had started. The building was designed by an international team of architects that included Le Corbusier from Switzerland, Oscar Niemeyer from Brazil, and representatives of numerous other nations. While the principal headquarters of the UN are in New York, there are major agencies located in Geneva, The Hague, Vienna, Montreal, Copenhagen, Bonn, and elsewhere.
