27 October 1985
Following major American television's first airing of the famine crisis in Ethiopia, the world celebrated the day as famine anniversary. The day was used to mark the end of famine and the successful international food aid. More than 50 000 people had a already left their relief camps and returned home with bags of seed and agricultural tools to help them in the process of recovery. However, close to six million Ethiopians were still in need of international food aid. For the last 70 years or more, Ethiopia had experienced repeated droughts and famine. The 1984 famine was one of the worst in Ethiopian history. In 2002 humanitarian agencies announced that Ethiopia was facing another famine similar to the 1984.
