Gwen Lister is born

Gwen Lister is a South African born Namibian Journalist, publisher and anti apartheid activist. She was born in East London on 5 December 1953. After graduating at the University of Cape Town, Lister left for Namibia and joined the Windhoek Advertiser as a political Correspondent. In Namibia  Lister focussed on exposing the atrocities of apartheid both in South Africa and Namibia. The South African government retaliated by getting the paper banned. The ban was lifted after an appeal but Lister found herself demoted as a result. She resigned from the paper and later started her own newspaper, The Namibian. Lister has received many awards for her work both as an activist and investigative journalist.
