South African soccer team Bafana Bafana played against the German national soccer team in an international friendly match, in Dusseldorf in Germany. The game was part of Bafana Bafana's preparations for the World Cup games to be held in France the following year. The South African team was under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed soccer coach Clive Barker. The game in Dusseldorf was the second for these two teams. Their first meeting was in 1995 in Johannesburg and ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
This was a game between two continental champions. Germany was the reigning European champion while Bafana Bafana had won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996. However, Germany had the upper hand over Bafana Bafana on the day and won the game by three goals to nil. Dieter Hamann, Oliver Bierhoff and Joerg Heinrich scored for the Germans. The first goal was scored in the 13th minutes with a long range shot. The second and the last goals were scored in 34th and 69th minutes respectively.
