Archibald Lamont was one of seven children born to Alexander Lamont, a master-mariner and businessman, and Sarah Graham. Born in Scotland, Lamont completed his schooling in Glasgow and in 1888 obtained an MA degree (cum laude) in Ethics at the University of Glasgow.
Lamont was an ordained missionary of the Presbyterian Church of England and inducted at Singapore. In 1910 he came to South Africa to visit his sister and became a permanent resident. He entered the world of politics in South Africa and in 1929 became the mayor of Durban, Lamont township (currently Lamontville) was named after him at the insistence of the Black people for whose cause he has campaigned so diligently.
