Mandela is made an honorary member of Manchester United as the club toured South Africa.
Conferred an honorary doctorate in government and politics by Universiti Teknologi Mara, the biggest public university in Malaysia, in recognition for his tireless efforts and triumph in struggling for the people's rights in his country and strengthening their socio-economy.
2007
The Westminster City Council agrees to erect a statue of Mandela opposite the Houses of Parliament in London.
Mandela is made Honorary citizen of Belgrade, Serbia "for his huge humanitarian past and contributions to mankind"
2008
January, The Europe-based A Different View cited Mandela as one of the 15 Champions of
World Democracy. Other champions mentioned are Lech Walesa, Corazon Aquino, and Václav Havel.
Michigan State University confers an LLD Honorary Degree to Mandela.
2009
July, Mandela receives the Arthur Ashe Courage Award presented by Venus and Serena Williams and is accepted on his behalf by his daughter and grandson.
November, The United Nations General Assembly announces that Mandela's birthday, 18 July, is to be known as 'Mandela Day', in recognition of his contribution to the liberation struggle, peace and freedom.
2010
