The South African Society of Artists celebrated its centenary on 26 September 2002 and on 9 December we mark the centenary of its first exhibition held at Cape Town's Drill Hall. The highlight of festivities marking this event is the commemorative exhibition mounted by Iziko Museums of Cape Town at the South African National Gallery. We are grateful to the Director of Art Collections, Marilyn Martin, for acknowledging through this exhibition the significant role-played by SASA in the development of South African art, including its involvement in the foundation of the SA National Gallery itself. Hayden Proud, Curator of Historical Collections of Paintings and Sculpture, Iziko Museums of Cape Town, has worked with unceasing commitment and enthusiasm to realise the present exhibition: we are greatly indebted to him.

The exhibition would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. To all of them, we wish to place on record our deep appreciation.
