Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree magister philosophiae in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Port Elizabeth. The Black political participation in South Africa has experienced many challenges whether under the then restrictive apartheid rule or under the new democratic rule. Because of its very nature, Black political participation is a source of ongoing conflict and is in a constant state of change that has a deep impact on behaviour and on society as a whole. This study analyse and show the role played by Inkatha and its relationship with other actors from 1990 to 1993 in order to avoid a repetition of conflict and violence.
