The twenty-fifth lecture in the Hoernle Memorial Lecture series delivered by Alan Pifer, and discusses the "experience of Black Americans with higher education, or, perhaps, the American experience with the higher education of Blacks". With reference to race relations, he describes the historical developments of the African-American in higher education from the arrival of the first Black Americans in 1619, discussing the slavery, and the prejudices at that time and up until the 1960's. He mentions the role of race relations between the race groups as seen as a central issue of American life, and the progress towards full integration, including higher education.
