On the 20th Anniversary of the passing of Comrade Oliver Reginald Tambo, 24 April 2013

The African National Congress joins the nation in commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the passing of Comrade Oliver Reginald Tambo, a towering giant of our struggle, a unifier and a selfless leader.

The African National Congress acknowledges and salutes the role played by Cde OR, keeping the African National Congress intact and mobilising the international community against the unjust and inhumane apartheid regime. We will forever remain indebted to Comrade Tambo who delivered back to South Africa a united and strong African National Congress following its unbanning, and thus ushering in our liberation and freedom.

As we commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passing of Comrade Tambo, the ANC led government is simultaneously entering the last mile towards 20 years of a free and democratic order, ideals for which Comrade OR Tambo lived for. The organisation and the movement at large remains inspired by the life of this selfless leader and thus reaffirms the words of the eulogy delivered by Isithandalwe President Mandela at the funeral of Cde Tambo 20 years ago that, "Oliver Tambo has not died because the ideals of freedom, human dignity and a colour-blind respect for every individual cannot perish. While the ANC lives, Oliver Tambo cannot die!
